2016 James Halliday Wine Companion - Our Results are in!

Date Posted:31 July 2015

James Halliday’s much anticipated 2016 Australian Wine Companion has just been released, and we’re chuffed with our results. The Black Sheep is proud to reveal Hugh Hamilton Wines received a Five Star rating, with a whopping fourteen wines awarded 90 points and above.

Almongst these wines is our Tonnellerie Single Barrel Series. This series is an odyssey in McLaren Vale Shiraz and French oak. One micro Shiraz parcel, three different barrels. The union of our Shiraz with the finest French oak is a heady combination that shows how the ultimate wine condiment weaves its magic. Only 24 dozen produced per barrel.

TONNELLERIE REMOND - 95 POINTS
"Well-integrated but plush. Halfway in style between the Francois Frere and Damy versions. Sex appeal and integration. Dark plums and wood smoke, velvety blackberry and resin. It coats the mouth with luscious flavour but remains well mannered at all times. Length is assured. 24 dozen made.” James Halliday

TONNELLERIE DAMY - 95 POINTS
“Bold but elegant. Feels generally seamless. Has an all-round spiciness despite the ooze of plummy, blackberried fruit. Not quite as saucy/sexy as the Francois Frere version but far less obvious. Fine wine.” James Halliday

TONNELLERIE FRANCIOS FRERES - 94 POINTS - SOLD OUT
“Strange project in the modern era, where site garners more interest than oak; though still interesting. Certainly the creation of wines with oak in the background rather than the foreground defeats the purpose in a way, hence oak is likely to be front and centre, as it is here. It's to the detriment of the fruit, but only just. Slippery, creamy, smoky oak introduces and farewells bright cherry-plum fruit flavours, notes of coffee and earth adding to the parade. Tannin is grainy, ropey, exemplary. Length is very good. The longer you look at it the closer it falls to balance; there's much to suggest that this has a bright future.” James Halliday

THE OTHER HEROES IN THE CLASS

'PURE BLACK' 2010 Icon Shiraz - SOLD OUT
- 96 POINTS
"Open-fermented, hand-plunged, matured in French oak, a 5-barrel selection from a total of 250 (2% of the total make). Deep and vibrant crimson-purple; the wine itself is also superb, with a freshness suggesting alcohol in the 13.5% range; the mouthfeel is fine and supple thanks to ultra fine-grained tannins, the flavours of black fruits, cedar, spice and licorice. Presentation to match." James Halliday

'BLACK BLOOD III' 2013 Black Sheep Vineyard Shiraz
- 96 POINTS
"Adds a layer of prettiness to the enormity of fruit. Saturated plum, licorice and asphalt flavour with choc cream and violet notes. Long chains of tannin come injected with inky fruit. Warm but not warming. Heroic style done (very) well." James Halliday

'THE MONGREL' 2013 Sangiovese Blend SOLD OUT
- 96 POINTS
"Exceptional hue and clarity; 12 months in used French barriques a very good decision; perfect sour cherry/red cherry fruit; long, silky tannins sign and deliver a terrific sangiovese." James Halliday

'JEKYLL & HYDE' 2013 Shiraz Viognier
- 95 POINTS
"Impressive wine. Perfumed and spice-riven though there's plenty of leathery, plummy, licoricey flavour on display. It feels soft and sturdy at once, its natural exuberance well tethered to firm, flavour-filled tannin. Coffeed oak adds a darkness to the performance. It's excellent from many angles." James Halliday

'ODDBALL' 2013 Saperavi - SOLD OUT
- 94 POINTS
"Strong impression of cola and licorice root flavour; gushing with dark berries; dry and herbal through the finish but not at the expense of the overall, juicy flow of the wine. A beautiful beast." James Halliday

'BLACK BLOOD I' 2013 Cellar Vineyard Shiraz
- 94 POINTS
"Thick with blackberry, licorice, asphalt and dark leather flavour, its slips of dark chocolatey oak well and truly integrated. It's so brooding it almost comes across as dull; there's very little vigour but it's dense, composed and lengthy." James Halliday

'THE SCOUNDREL' 2013 Tempranillo - SOLD OUT
- 93 POINTS
"Luscious style with bountiful red and black berry flavour backed by savoury herb-like notes, particularly through the back palate. Highly attractive. Ready to drink" James Halliday

'BLACK BLOOD II' 2013 Church Vineyard Shiraz
- 91 POINTS
"Dense, raisiny, sweet black berries with firm tannin locking it all in. Exaggerated style of shiraz, warm through the finish and pushing the boundaries of flavour ripeness into the realm of baked road/bitumen territory. Mighty, but somewhere along the way pleasure left the building." James Halliday

'THE VILLAIN' 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon SOLD OUT
- 91 POINTS

"Heft of berried fruit with dusty herbal notes picking out the finish. Varietal, well powered and with satisfying length." James Halliday

'BLACK OPS' 2013 Shiraz Mataro Saperavi
- 91 POINTS
"Fills the mouth with warm, simple flavour. Tar, blackberry and licorice flavours sweep sweetly through the palate. Warm and generous." James Halliday

'SHEARER'S CUT' 2013 Shiraz SOLD OUT
- 90 POINTS
"The sweetness of redcurrant; the lift of peppermint; the oomph of ripe plum. It's soft and bright with an earthen spiciness as an important but background player. Fruit is the go here, ready to be enjoyed now." James Halliday
