The Hamilton family have been growing grapes since 1837. By the time Hugh Hamilton Wines began in 1991, Hugh had accumulated over 150 years of knowledge, not only on the job but through osmosis that comes from years around family dining tables and kicking around the vines at ‘Hamilton’s Ewell’.

Hugh had been around the traps long enough to know that McLaren Vale was one of the most reliable and rewarding places on the planet to grow quality grapes.

Some winemakers bounce around creating wines for the critics and following the latest trend, Hugh does what he feels like… but… we’re always ecstatic when those wine critics, such as James Halliday, are also delighted in the wines that we are so immensely proud to create.

James Halliday’s 2018 ‘Wine Companion’ has just been released and there are eight Black Sheep Wines above 90 points.


‘Pure BlackShiraz 2013 – 96 points
“The colour is seductive - black-dark purple with a blood red tinge, and glossy, so is the wine. There's a swathe of black fruits, licorice, dark chocolate, anise, menthol and oak seamlessly integrated. Make no mistake, this is structured to the max but everything is balanced with the tannins voluptuous and dense, the length long and powerful.”

‘Black Blood III’ Black Sheep Vineyard Shiraz 2015 – 96 points
“From the deep sands of Blewitt Springs. The bouquet signals the bright, lively medium-bodied palate with its mix of red and black cherry, plum and spice fruit. The tannins are superfine, adding length and class. The three Black Blood shirazs are the most convincing trio linking different vineyard soils and the wine in the glass.”

‘Black Blood II’ Church Vineyard Shiraz 2015 – 95 points
“Alluvial soils. Very different from the Black Blood I, more open and fragrant, the medium to full-bodied palate with a mix of red and black fruits, supple and rich, with perfectly weighted tannins.”

‘Jekyll & Hyde' Shiraz Viognier 2015 – 95 points
“A 93/7% blend, the Shiraz vines dating back to '47, the adjacent viognier of much newer origin. The two varieties are picked together and co-fermented with a 3-day cold soak, 6-day ferment and 5-day post-ferment maceration, matured for 17 months in French (23% new) and 2% new American oak. This is full-bodied, but moves deftly across the palate in a continuous stream of black fruits, dark chocolate and cedar, the tannins ripe and synchronous.”

‘The Villain’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 – 95 points
“Open-fermented with cultured yeast, 14 days on skins, matured for 20 months in French oak (20% new). Potent blackcurrant and bay leaf aromas lead into a full-bodied palate, tannins a positive feature adding a note to ‘take me seriously'. I've come to agree I should do so, although not without a reservation or two. Great value for the cellar.”

‘Black Blood I’ Cellar Vineyard Shiraz 2015 – 94 points
“Black cracking clays. Full-bodied, entirely in the black fruit and licorice spectrum, forbidding but compelling. Strong tannins are made to measure, the oak largely irrelevant.”

‘Black Ops’ Shiraz Saperavi Nero d’Avola 2015 – 93 points
“A 74/22/4% blend, open-fermented, 12 days on skins, matured for 20 months in 98% French oak (23% new) and 2% new American oak. Full-bodied in every respect: black fruits, new oak, dark chocolate, licorice, plum, blackberry, cedar and ripe tannins. Savoury nuances appear briefly, then swallowed up in the swarm of rich flavours.”

‘Shearer’s Cut’ Shiraz 2015 – 90 points
“Hand-picked by 59 members of the Black Sheep Club, open-fermented, 2 days cold soak, 7-day ferment, 3 days post-ferment maceration, matured for 20 months in used French oak. Bright crimson-purple; this opens with attractive dark fruits, then does a right-hand turn on the back-palate and finish as tannins clench their fists. 5 or so years in the cellar should result in a wine for the fruit.”
