180 years in the grape business is no easy feat.
While there are many family-owned vineyards, there are few that can claim to be 180 years in age. In fact there is only one – Hugh Hamilton Wines is Australia’s oldest surviving family in the wine industry. The McLaren Vale grapes were planted by founding patriarch Richard Hamilton nearly two centuries ago and remain integral to the family’s vino, most recently being celebrated in its Bloodline series. The business itself remains an impressively family affair, and at its helm is CEO Mary Hamilton. The 6th generation winemaker (who happens to be Hugh’s daughter) has been handed the charge of continuing the family’s legacy, a job she is doing with aplomb. She recently spoke to delicious. about everything from dynasties to a good drop.
